First of all, let me start by saying I love my corporate day job. And I’m darn good at it. But about five years ago when I attended my first Lisa Nichols Speak and Write to Make Millions workshop, I learned the importance of having multiple revenue streams. In other words, a side hustle. Or two. Or three.
Now I’m incredibly institutionalized, which means I like getting a regular paycheck. And bonus checks. And getting paid even when I’m sick. I like having a set number of vacation days, even though my company recently switched to “unlimited” vacation days. (Like I’m ever going to take an excessive amount of days off.) But having an additional cushion is not only nice, it can also be a lifesaver in the event life … well … happens. Anyone out there ever been downsized at any point in your career? Or know of someone who has? Uh-huh.
Lend me your ear, countrymen. You must have a side hustle, or another stream of revenue, coming in. If anything, it will give you some leverage.
If you’re the person working the nine-to-five accountant gig to keep the lights on, but you really want to be a children’s book illustrator, then now is the time to leverage. You don’t need to quit your day job to get started. Rather, as Lisa likes to share, think of your current employer as an investor in not just your dreams but in your career. You need money for art supplies or art programs, right? Take a portion of your “investor’s” check, say “Thank you, ma’am. May I have another?” and buy the heck outta those supplies and get to hustling on illustrating those books. It’s the best of both worlds.
