Here at PowerfulPenny.com, we are all about using SMART goals to achieve the things you want. What’s a SMART goal, you ask? This is a type of goal that is:
S—Specific
M—Measurable
A—Attainable
R—Realistic
T—Time-based
Now, last week I spoke about having a side hustle to put some money in your pocket. I also mentioned that you need to be patient in order to achieve your goals. This means you need to take baby steps and be SMART about those steps. Like I shared here in January. But in case you missed it, let’s walk through it again, okay?
Let’s say for example you’re a mechanical engineer who always wanted to be a radio host. Fabulous, let’s do it! But how do you get there? That’s what I’m here for, to help you figure out what to do next. See, that’s my side hustle. So let’s give it a try.
First, you’ve gotta be specific. What type of radio program? News, politics, entertainment? Online, on-air, independent, conglomerate-owned? NPR, OWN, WNOV, WGCI? You get the picture.
Next, you have to be sure your goal, which I call a Pink Elephant (a larger-than-life, almost out of reach audacious goal) is measurable. How much training will you need to become a host? If you start your own podcast, what equipment will you need to record a sound-tastic show? How often do you see yourself on the air or producing the podcast? Daily, weekly, every leap year? By answering these types of questions, you’ll be able to accurately measure what’s needed to succeed and if you’re getting closer to it.
Becoming a radio host is certainly doable, but is it attainable for you? Do you want to be like Larry King? In 1989, the Guinness Book of World Records credited him with logging the most hours on a national radio. He has won awards, said to have interviewed over 30,000 people, begun his journalism career in the 1950s, and is a multimillionaire. Knowing that he has done all of this, it makes sense that he is as successful as he is. Are you able and willing to put in the same kind of work to become the next Larry King?
